THIS week’s hot new No 1 David Zowie really is a Starman
Unsurprisingly, the 32-year old Kentish DJ was named after his father’s pop hero David Bowie – who christened his own son Zowie – but it could have been worse. David, who topped the first new Friday chart countdown yesterday, told me: “It is my actual name and it’s no mockery of Bowie. “But originally I had like 12 Bowie names. It was David Ziggy Zowie Aladdin Sane Thin White Duke Twig The Wonder Kid – that was my actual name but my mum changed my birth certificate.” Naturally, Bowie was an inspiration for the DJ’s music too. “When I was younger I avoided it as I was inundated with Bowie. I always loved the music being young but as soon as I turned into a teenager and understood what was going on, I appreciated Bowie more and his music helped.”

The real Bowie even helped his Dad get over a serious illness. “When my dad got ill years ago, Bowie sent him a get well message. I got him on audio saying: ‘Roy… David here, I’m in the studio in Switzerland with Brian Eno’. “I should sample it.”

Dave is now following in his namesake’s footsteps by landing at No 1 with club banger House Every Weekend.

It’s the first song to top the Official Charts as they switch from Sundays to Fridays to tie in with global charts and international release dates.

He said: “It means there’s a lot of parties over the weekend. I’ve been invited to a lot of parties, so nobody call me early on Monday.”
He added about his success: “It’s mind-blowing. The track started from the clubs and grew from there. I don’t just do it at the weekend. It’s been every weekday as well. But it is a motto that works for people, that’s how people live. I’ve had people send me pictures of tattoos with the lyrics on.”

Dave cut his teeth making reggae then R&B, but now he is working on a full album of his house creations. “I’m aiming high. I want Madonna on there,” he shared. “I definitely want to make an album and it’s going to be a full house album with more vocals.”

You can catch Dave at MTV Crashes Plymouth as well as Ibiza and Ayia Napa this summer. His three-disc compilation House Every Weekend drops soon too. Let’s Dance!
